How this tool works

The browser decodes the source image to a canvas, optionally scales the pixel dimensions, then re-encodes it as JPEG or WebP at the selected quality. Compression ratio = 1 − output bytes ÷ input bytes.

Example

A 4,000-pixel-wide phone photo can be limited to 1,600 pixels and encoded at 75% quality to reduce both pixel count and compressed file size.

Common questions

Does the image leave my browser?

No. This implementation processes the selected image with the browser Canvas API and does not upload it to the site.

Is a smaller file always visually identical?

No. Lossy JPEG/WebP compression can remove detail. Compare the preview with the original before using the result.
