Power Factor Correction Calculator

Estimate the reactive power correction required to move a load from an existing power factor to a higher target power factor.

Required correction42.1 kVAR
kVA before125 kVA
kVA after105.3 kVA

Preliminary sizing only. Capacitor application can require harmonic, resonance, switching and overvoltage review.

How this tool works

Required kVAR = kW × [tan(cos⁻¹(PF₁)) − tan(cos⁻¹(PF₂))].

Example

Improving a 100 kW load from 0.80 to 0.95 power factor requires roughly 42 kVAR of capacitive correction.

Common questions

Can I target 1.00 power factor?

Mathematically yes, but practical systems often target below unity to avoid leading power factor under changing load.

Does this check harmonics?

No. Capacitor application can require harmonic and resonance review.
