Generator Current Calculator

Calculate approximate generator full-load current from nameplate kVA and terminal voltage. The result is useful for preliminary feeder, breaker and load-bank checks before applying manufacturer and code requirements.

Approx. full-load current601.4 A
Apparent power500 kVA

Preliminary current calculation only. Final generator, conductor and overcurrent-device application must follow manufacturer data, codes and project requirements.

How this tool works

Three-phase current = kVA × 1000 ÷ (√3 × line-to-line voltage). Single-phase current = kVA × 1000 ÷ voltage.

Example

A 500 kVA, 480 V three-phase generator has an approximate full-load current of 601 A.

Common questions

Does power factor affect current when kVA is known?

No. kVA already represents apparent power, so the current calculation does not require a separate power-factor input.

Can I size a breaker directly from this number?

Not by itself. Apply applicable codes, continuous-load rules, manufacturer guidance and project requirements.
