Slope Calculator
Find the slope of a line through two Cartesian points and express the line in slope-intercept form when it is not vertical.
Slope2
Rise / run8 / 4
Line equationy = 2x + 0
How this tool works
Slope m=(y₂−y₁)/(x₂−x₁). Intercept b=y₁−mx₁.
Example
Points (1,2) and (5,10) give slope 2 and line y=2x.
Common questions
What happens for a vertical line?
When x₁=x₂ the slope is undefined and the line is reported as x=constant.
Can slope be negative?
Yes. A line descending as x increases has a negative slope.
